I’m running because I have a deep understanding of how education policy becomes classroom practice and results in student learning. I want to bring that expertise to the task of making NPS the best public schools in the nation.
I Will Bring Almost Forty Years of Education Experience to:
- Repair relationships and renew trust between the school committee, educators, families, and the community
- Ensure the NPS Portrait of a Learner is the true standard for improvements in planning, policy, and practice
- Empower educators to innovate and share their knowledge, expertise, & leadership with colleagues and the community
- Re-center the civic mission of public education in teaching & learning, school governance, and public engagement
ELECT EXPERIENCE
My background:
- Retired public educator & 18-year Newtonian.
- Former Social Studies Director in Weston, Weymouth, and Everett.
- Decades of hands-on experience in instruction, educator evaluation, budgeting, professional development, curriculum, and assessment.
- Ph. D. candidate, UMass Boston
- Ed. M., Harvard University Graduate School of Education
My priorities:
Repair relationships and renew trust
Communication and relationships built on trust are what enable excellence in our classrooms and in our community. They must be job #1. I will work to repair relationships and renew trust between the school committee, educators, families, and the community.
Portrait of a Learner as the guide
Successful teaching and learning happen when planning starts with the end in mind. The “Portrait of a Learner” NPS has adopted should be the North Star of its policy and practice. I will ensure the NPS Portrait of a Learner is the true standard for improvements in planning, policy, and practice.
Empower educators
Innovation occurs when educators are empowered to be creative, not when “data-driven change-makers” walk in the door with the next new thing. I will empower educators to innovate and share their knowledge, expertise, & leadership with colleagues and the community.
Public education's mission
Public schools are not just about career-training and economic competitiveness. They are also the way we teach and model democracy, and we need to elevate that mission. I will work to re-center the civic mission of public education in teaching & learning, school governance, and public engagement.
